Samuel had not been to Chicago in more years than he cared to remember. Much had changed and much had not. Either way this was now to be his home. He thought to make use of the vacuum created by the toppling of the Bravotierlmo’s tower of antiquated power. He had done business with both Clay and Giovanni from a distance and he couldn’t say that he’d liked either men. Both smelled of putrefaction in his mind. Their grasp however was as firm as a steel gauntlet. So much like the hundreds of men and women who made a good deal of their bulk through nefarious means he accepted what they dished out eating the cents on the dollar they charged for doing business in or with their city.
He’d diligently begun slowly absorbing what crumbs he could so that he might set up a satellite office here in the friendly confines. If he knew then what he knew now he would have moved with greater speed. Looking around the relatively threadbare office which would serve as his headquarters he knew this simply would not do. So begrudgingly he called the leasing agent who held control here in this building and agreed to her exorbitant rate for the larger suites on the seventh floor. He laughed at the irony that by legitimizing the bulk of his company that it was now he who was being politely fleeced.
Hanging up he called to Abel for him to arrange a meeting with their local manager. The man would pay sorely for having allowed the face of Sam’s Sun Holdings to have been so poorly tended. Looking over the reports he was glad to know that the quarters profits had taken an upturn. He stood moving to the window looking out on Adams as the busy loop workers scurried to and from their various dealings. Yes the seventh floor would provide a much better view indeed. Samuel watched as one particular young man struggled against the wind his parcels and an unruly two-wheeler.
Sighing he removed the phone to which very few had the number. Its encrypted satellite frequency was virtually untraceable with it he could call to anywhere in the world; or from anywhere. He found it humorous that he was merely calling somewhere across town. Gamble had been in Chicago for quite a few days now he should have made a few moves by now. He expected the man to fall through his door at any moment now and was surprised that he hadn’t. He was the only man yet living that could call him anything but Samuel. In fact he found the constant allusion of him being Scottish humorous in the extreme.
As the phone rang he could feel his beast stirring rolling over to find a better perch within him. After all these years he and the beast within had a healthy respect for one another and both knew whom was truly king. That being understood he would have to eventually look up the local pride in person. He’d watched the Regina from afar careful to stay upwind of her. The moon was coming and I\while he had his ways of venting the beast it had been some many months since he ran with a pride on a full moons hunt. Tonight would be the night when he would make his move. She was usually at her art gallery so once this call was concluded he would ring her there and arrange a visit…
