Chicago, home of the magical fey whose powers know no bounds...
Chicago, home of the witches and supernatural beings who crave power.
The setting is present day Chicago, Illinois. It is a city that has recently been rocked by a purging of the supernatural community. None of the powers that be are sure exactly what transpired. Unsure of what caused the recent troubles they are sure of one thing... Chicago is once again habitable to their kind. As such the city is in the middle of a land grab the likes of which hasn't been seen since the westward expansion. The first casualties appear to be the local Streak as the other clans have their hands at the throats of those who lust for power. Everyone wants their fair share and the city is in uproar as the dust begins to settle...

Elf McKinney bit her lip and looked around at the area she was in. How had she gotten here in the first place? She shouldn't be here. She had been walking. SHe hadn't been paying attention. That explained everything. Elf not paying attention ended up producing bad results like this. Being utterly lost and underground. The last part made her shiver. She didn't like the thought of being underground. It was enclosed and dark. It was lonely and disconnected. She needed to be out int he open again. She wasn't getting that lucky though.
Elf pouted and squatted down on the ground pulling her legs under her. "Now what am I supposed to do?" she muttered almost childishly. She couldn't very well find her way out of this place. Well she might ahve a chance of diong it, but it was a risky chance. It was something that was unlikely to happen because it was Elf McKinney who was this unlucky and no one else. One of these days she'd figure out how to fix this.

Alex was a pragmatic woman. She knew unseating Arturo would take time. She could just challenge him and be done but the vampires had shown her the way. This could be a bloodless coup if she but planned her steps correctly. Arturo was business enough that he would see the light if it made dollars and sense to him. To help her think Alex had taken to showing her former clan mates the workings of the Under city. They would be able to stay out of Arturos nose until she had a better plan than just beating sense into him. As enjoyable as the idea was she would hold her hand. The Rat King deserved that much for having done what little he did. As her sergeant once told her you respect the rank not whats beneath the shirt. As she made her way back from delivering food stuffs she smelled the girl. Human and afraid. It happened occasionally someone would get lost. Sometimes they did so on a dare from friends. Most times they were drunk and merely walked past all of the markers looking for a place to relieve themselves. This one didn't seem drunk. She gave no scent of such. So Alex waited watching her. As she spoke to herself Alex was barely able to stifle a laugh. Moving closer to the young lady Alex answered her question. "You can start by standing up thats a runoff vent soon there will be things on you that I don't even want to think about." Turning on the flashlight that rested idly in her hands Alex closed the distance shining the light at herself so as to not scare the girl anymore. It would cost her a few seconds of her night vision but the girl was probably scared enough.

Elf smiled only a little absently at the woman who spoke to her. "I probably wouldn't want to think about them, but I might anyway. Cleaning out the back of a taxi can be really gross." Despite saying that, Elf stood up and tried to ignore the light. It was a bright light. One that was slightly annoying after the darkness.
"Are you lost or are do you know exactly where you're going? I wouldn't be lost, but I never seem to be able to pay attention enough My mind doesn't stay on straight lines like everyone else's. How far do you think I got before I gave up? I have no idea. I'll stop talking now. I'm jumping." Jumping of course referring to jumping topics. A terrible habit she couldn't break.

Alex cocked her head at the strange little woman. She was cute but there seemed to be all sorts of things going on her head. Thinking it best to get her out of here before someone else stumbled across her Alex indulged her. "No I'm not lost but I don't know exactly where I'm going. The trip is usually the purpose anyways. I'm Alex by the way. Come on lets get you back to civilization." Alex lowered the flashlight. She hated using it but traipsing around in the dark would probably scare the girl. "So where do you stay? and what are you doing down here?"

"I live here in Chicago," Elf said iwth a smile. "I know I didn't get that far. As for how I got down here. I'm not entirely sure. I was thinking. Or rather a lack of thinking. Or maybe you'd call it a bit of both. I was distracted though and the next thing I knew, I was wandering down around here. I guess that's what I get for not paying attention. It's very nice to meet you Alex, my name is Aelflaed McKinney though most everyone just calls me Elf. Easier to remember and to pronounce."
That was a true fact, one she was still trying to figure out the logic behind. Elf wasn't the kind of person who understood logic though so that might just be a dead end.

"Aelflaed sounds like 'Elf Laid' shouldn't be that hard to pronounce, its memorable. I like it and I won't call you a thing but that after all that is your given name." Alex turned back to the young lady smiling. "And no you weren't that far into the places here but even this far and you could have been down here hours. I know the smell had to be getting to you. I don't live all that far if you'd like we can head there and get cleaned up before getting you home."

"Really?" Elf said brightly. "Someone who can say my name!" She shouted happily. Her words bounced and echoed off the walls. Silly of course, but she didn't really care. most people didn't realize how precious it was for someone to be able to correctly say their name. Maybe one day they would and they would understand a little of why such a small silly thing was so precious to the crazy girl.
"Actually, I didn't really even notice the smell. I wasn't paying attention. One of my many problems. Thank you for the offer though. I think I'll take you up on that. Apparently those that are considered normal frown upon people who don't smell nice."

There were no witnesses to the fast friendship struck up save the rats that were far too busy scrounging for the castoff food stuff that littered here and there. As the ladies made their way out into the land above the rats cared not one whit...
